Student Advisory Council
Roanoke County School Board

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?

The purpose of the Student Advisory Council to the School Board is to act on behalf of all students of the Roanoke County Public Schools. SAC representatives serve as advocates on behalf of all students. The students work cooperatively to improve the education and environment in all Roanoke County Public Schools, and to aid in the communication among the students, the school administration, the School Board and the community.

WHAT IS THE COMPOSITION OF THE STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL?

The Student Advisory Council is composed of one/two students from each grade level in high school (grades 9 - 12), and one/two students from each middle school (grade 8).

HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED TO SERVE ON THE STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL?

The selection of representatives to the Student Advisory Council is conducted by a combination of a principal/student selection process. The principal and teachers nominate the candidates and the students vote for the representatives of their choice.

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL?

Student members of the SAC should attend all SAC meetings. We meet from 6:00 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month from September to May at the Central Office in the Board Room. Sometimes, there are extra meetings and events that students are expected to attend. SAC members should also plan to attend at least 3 School Board meetings per year.

Prior to attending SAC meetings, each school representative should contact the principal to gather information to share at the SAC meeting. SAC Representatives and principals should work cooperatively to gather information from students and the community.

Student representatives should meet with principals on a regular basis to share information from SAC meetings and determine methods of sharing appropriate information with the student body.
