Penn Forest Elementary School is dedicated to developing the unique talents of individuals to their maximum potential as they become lifelong learners and contributing members of an ever-changing society.
7:50 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.
School begins at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 2:20 p.m. A student is not to report to school before 7:35 a.m. since teachers are not on duty until 7:35 a.m.
If a student is to be checked out of school early, the parent must report to the office to sign the student out.
Parents who consistently send their children to school late or pick them up early will be required to meet with an administrator.
Each day's absence must be accounted for under the state's compulsory attendance law. If your child will be absent, call the school and leave information concerning the absence or tardiness by 8:00 a.m. Request for homework assignments should also be made by 8:00 a.m. Between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. a message may be left at 772-7590 regarding your child's absence or request for homework.
Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. must use the front entrance and report to the office for a tardy slip.
Each child will be given a student information card which must be completed and returned to school. Included on the card are the names of two relatives or neighbors who have given their permission to be called in the event that we are unable to reach you. Please notify the office of any changes to the information on this card., especially changes of address, phone numbers, or employment.
BAD WEATHER OR EMERGENCY CONDITIONS
In case of bad weather (snow, severe storms) or emergency conditions, announcements concerning delayed opening or school closings will be made over local radio and television stations. Patrons may also call Roanoke County Information (772-8705). When school is delayed, staff will also report on a delayed schedule; therefore, there are no provisions for the supervision of students who are dropped off at the regular time.
If unusual or hazardous conditions arise during the time schools are normally in session, the superintendent may decided to dismiss school early. Please make arrangements for these special situations prior to a need to implement them. Please be advised, individual phone calls are not possible.
All medication must be delivered to the school by the parent/guardian. The medicine must be in the original container. All medications are to be administered from the school office and the Medication Permission Form must be completed before any medication is given.
Children are not permitted to ride buses other than the one designated to them. No exception to this rule will be considered, unless the request is made in writing by a parent and approved by administrative personnel.
BIRTHDAY PARTIES AND INVITATIONS
Snacks for all class members may be provided and served at the teacher's discretion. Parents are encouraged to mail invitations to parties when possible. Names, addresses, and phone numbers of students can be found in the student directory obtained through PTA Membership. However, if invitations are to be sent out in grades K-1, all students in the class should receive an invitation. Invitations sent in for grades 2-5 should be discretely distributed in the student's mailbox at a time to be determined by the classroom teacher.
All rising second, third, and fourth grade students will have the opportunity to purchase a Student Assignment Planner. Classroom teachers will be using a mirror copy of the planner to post daily homework assignments. The goal is to teach good organizational skills to the students and to help parents stay informed.
Our school phone is a business phone. Please try to handle all pick-up or other arrangements with your child before he/she comes to school. Please do not call the school office and ask to speak with your child. The principal must approve telephone use by a student.
1. T-shirts must cover the stomach, and shorts must be a reasonable length.
2. Halter tops are not allowed. Shirts must cover the entire back and stomach. NO spaghetti straps.
3. Earrings should not hang lower that 1/4" below the ear lobe.
4. Shoes should be appropriate for physical activity. Sandals, flip-flops, open toed shoes, etc., do not provide enough protection to a child's foot to be able to participate safely in daily physical activities.
5. Hats or head coverings may not be worn in the school building, except when permitted for special SCA spirit days.
6. Clothing referring to beer, alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs is prohibited. Additionally, a teacher may request that a student not wear a certain item if it is considered offensive or disruptive to the class.
7. Baggy pants should not interfere with a student's ability to participate in any school activity. If necessary, a child may be asked to pull up his/her pants and put on a belt or change clothing.
Roanoke County students are assigned a lunch account number that follows them through their entire school tenure. When parents send money to the school for lunch, the money is placed in the account for their lunch. Money may be added in any amount, at any time. Hot lunches are available for all children. A menu is distributed monthly.
Florists are not allowed to deliver flowers, balloons, etc., to school for students. In addition to the disruption, it is impossible for children to transport these items home.
You are cordially invited to join out PTA. The PTA is a vital, working organization that provides immeasurable assistance to the school's programs.
The Penn Forest Staff recognizes the importance of the many contributions by the school volunteers. This program has provided countless hours of service to the school. School volunteers are asked to sign in at the front desk each time they work at the school and wear a nametag.
