Thompson is Roanoke County's nominee for VA Teacher of the Year

Kay Thompson, 7th grade science teacher at William Byrd Middle School, has been selected as Roanoke County's nominee for the Virginia Teacher of the Year program.

"Mrs. Thompson is very caring and understands what it takes to turn lemons into lemonade.  She is not accepting of 'I can’t,' but very encouraging as she expects, 'I can.' Mrs. Thompson is a wonderful example of a lady who would not settle for life’s circumstances, but chose to achieve and has been blessed with great success.  Mrs. Thompson truly understands the stress that students bring to the classroom every day and continues to work hard for every child to have their own success story, as she has," said Janet Womack, principal at William Byrd Middle School.

Thompson first joined Roanoke County Public Schools six years ago and in that time, she has taught science, served as the science department chair, hosted the Roanoke County Science Fair, served as the school representative for the Roanoke County Education Association, and served as the school representative for the Roanoke County Employee Advisory Committee.
