President Obama to address nation's school children Sept. 8

President Obama has announced he will make an address to the nation's school children on Sept. 8, 2009. Roanoke County Public School students may view the President's address via C-Span (Cox channel 77, Comcast channel 15). C-Span coverage is set to begin at noon.

This is an optional activity. Parents may notify the school if they do not want their child to watch the President's address. Forms have been sent home with students. For a generic opt-out form, click here.

On Sept. 7, the White House released the text of the President's address. Click here read the speech from the White House Web site.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the president will speak directly to the nation’s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.

Roanoke County students will not take part in additional activities related to the President's address. It is our position that parents have the choice whether their children watch the address or not.

For more information about the President's address, please visit the White House Web site.
