Flu vaccination information:

Flu season is upon us, and as in years past, the Virginia Department of Health again recommends that individuals be immunized this year with the seasonal flu vaccine. We also encourage parents and students to receive an annual flu shot to help reduce the cases of influenza in our schools.

There are several options to receive a flu shot.

1. Local pharmacies are currently providing flu shots. If you carry health insurance, many of them will charge you the Tier I Drug Plan Fee only and file with the insurance company for you. CVS is an example of this type of pharmacy. It is advisable to inquire with your pharmacy ahead of time for their current rates and procedures, as some of them may charge an additional administrative fee or not participate in the insurance reimbursement option at all.

2. Flu clinics are being held at Valley View Mall on Wednesdays 12‐6, Fridays 12‐6 and Saturdays 10‐4 (walk‐ins welcome).

Area Health Departments also are making flu vaccines available. It is suggested to call to schedule appointments for those or call to see when walk‐ins are welcome). Roanoke City Health Department is 283‐5050, Roanoke County/Salem Health Department is 387‐3350 and the Vinton Health Department is 857‐6991.

Roanoke County Public Schools is providing flu shot clinics at each school site for all employees and retirees currently working under the early retirement plan, free of charge. Spouses of current employees and retirees not currently working under the early retirement plan may participate for a fee of $18. For specific information about when flu shot clinics will be held at each school site, see your building administrator.

If for some reason employees are unable to participate at a school-based clinic, employees are encouraged to get a flu shot from the other options listed above.

Questions can be directed to the Roanoke City Health Department at (540) 283-5050.
